CANOPIES & AWNINGS

What is the difference between an awning and a canopy? The two terms are often used interchangeably, but they actually have different meanings.

What is an Awning?

An awning provides shade and covers windows. By installing large fabric structures that provide shade over windows, businesses can keep their employees cool while maintaining visibility into offices through screened panels. Awnings also protect people from rain or snow as well as direct sunlight- all without blocking out light entirely like other types of covers.

What is a Canopy?

A canopy is an overhead structure, usually made from metal or fabric, that covers the entire area of the roof. They are commonly used in open-air markets and outdoor events to provide shade for customers and vendors alike. Canopies offer more protection than typical awnings because they completely cover an area rather than just one singular window.

How Long Do They Both Last?

Awnings and canopies both provide protection from the elements. They are also built to last, though canopy materials should be changed out at least every five years for commercial purposes, while awning material will need to be replaced much more often due to harsh weather conditions.

The good news is that the commercial-grade materials that Sundance uses will last much longer before needing replacement due to harsh weather conditions like rain, hail, and sun.
